Transformers Animated is the newest animated incarnation of the famous robotic toyline. The series made its debut on The Cartoon Network on December 26, 2007 and has been shown on NickToons in the UK since March 2008. It is produced by Cartoon Network Studios and animated by Japanese animation studios. Up until now there has been one 90-minute movie and 39 additional 30 minute episodes have been released over the course of three seasons.
The show’s continuity is separate from any other previous Transformers series, despite featuring footage from the first series (The Transformers) in its first episode as a historical film. This has allowed for new takes on characters and staples of the Transformer universe without upsetting fans of the original continuity.
The basic storyline revolves around five main Autobots (Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Ratchet, Prowl, and Bulkhead) finding the fabled Allspark only to become a part of the long-lasting battle between the Autobots and their enemies, the villainous Decepticons. A heated space battle ends up stranding the Autobots in mid-21st century Detroit where they become the heroic figures they usually end up being, fighting both Decepticons as well as human supervillains.
The Detroit landscape is the usual background for episodes, the Transfomers’ battle is rekindled in this future city. No longer going under the moniker of the Motor City, it has now become known as the Robot City due to Dr. Isaac Sumdac’s non-alien robotic creations. Sari Sumdac, his 8-year-old daughter, is the main human character that the Autobots saved when they landed on Earth. She usually accompanies the Autobots on their various adventures.
The series is animated by Japanese animation studios MOOK DLE, The Answer Studio (this is the Japanese studio that animated the popular cartoon Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go!), and Studio 4°C. At one point in time the series was to be called Transformer: Heroes but the latter was thrown out in favor of the term “Animated” to help the distinguish the show from the live action film that opened up around the same time as the series debuted.
The show’s supervising director is Matt Youngberg, from Teen Titans and The Batman fame, with Cartoon Network vice-president Sam Register as executive producer and Vincent Aniceto as line producer. Additionally, Beast Machines writer Marty Isenberg also came on board as the series head writer. Art director/lead character designer Derrick Wyatt, previously known from Teen Titans and The Legion of Super Heroes created the new distinct look to the animation that this series introduces.
